Default Faulty o2 sensor

Hey guys, hope all is well.
So a few nights ago I found myself with a few quite moments in between episodes of my new daughter playing funny buggers (HEEELLLPPPP MEEEEEE!)
Anyway i got bored and decided to pull the codes. I did this by shorting out the 2-pin connector under the steering wheel and turning on ignition. To my surprise the ABS light flashed out a sequence... 6 long flashes followed by 1 short. Code 61 - from my reference material this is "Bank 1, #1 H02S (heated oxygen sensor) malfunction\slow response" im assuming bank refers to the row of cylinders, and #1 refers to front sensor before the CAT. Under causes it reads: "Cause: heating inoperative/wiring/h02s" My car is running quite good apart from the occasional bog down\violent bunny hopping when taking off (not due to poor clutch work). I disconnected the battery, waited about 5-10mins then re-connected to see if the code was wiped...but it was still there.

So before spending aorund $250 to replace the front o2 sensor I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. Also is it easy to get to the sensor from engine bay after removing heat shield, or is it better to go from underneath. Thanks fellaz.

P.s im not sure if my refernce material is even correct so a confirmation of what code 61 actually is would be useful too.

Yep replaced mine under the same code.
I ended up replacing both as the Cat centre parts had come loose of the years and slide forward and back with acceleration changes, this sheared off the rear sensor and it was reading errors also.
I purchased them on amazon of all places with OEM NTK versions which solved the problem.
OEM from Honda was quoted at about $700 installed. OMG!

Yeah, another part that is ridiculously expensive to buy from a Honda dealer but is actually a generic part available online for way less.

I access from underneath if I remember correctly. Been a while since I was OEM.

Yeah the Honda dealer is a joke, I still can't get over the 7 odd grand they want to charge for a hardtop. But anyways i found the sensor on cfl for $223.43...still expensive in my eyes but there's not much you can do i guess.
Was just thinking though, when i disconnecfted battery to reset ECU and re-connected, after shorting out the pins I only turned on ignition, i never started the engine. So by disconnecting battery, if it did actually reset the ECU, how the hell could it tell it had a faulty o2 sensor without the engine running?

The O2 sensor has a heater element in it that fails. The ECU can detect when it sees a load on this line and when it goes open circuit.

Have you checked the price on the OEM version. Honda don't actually make O2 sensors.

They have a lot of choices from $250 down to $20.
