Well it depends, most standard mechanics dont even have the tools let alone the know how to do this job. I guess if he didnt know what he was doing he wouldnt have taken the job.

Talk to him, maybe he's sending the job elsewhere.?

So, i've been very productive at work by reading through almost every thread relating to diffs and component. Now my car is at a honda Mechanic who has looked after my car well in the past but after reading the threads, its seems that i should have taken the car to a diff specialist to get the centre and C&P replaced as it seems that it is quite a tedious task.

Should i be worried?
So it turns out i should have been worried...........
I was driving yesterday and quite calmly at that when i heard a *bang* when i was shifting from 3rd to 2nd. I stopped the car and tried to move it and the car would move a little but then it would start making a horrible grinding noise and wouldnt move(i tried this in both 1st and 2nd). It will go in reverse fine and goes into all the gears well, it just doesnt move. I'm thinking the C&P wasnt installed correctly but im not completely sure. I'm taking it back to the place wher i got it fixed initially but i was wondering if anyone has any advice on what i should say to the mechanic becuase i really dont want to pay for labour again

Tricky one. Does he guarantee his work, or does the part supplier guarantee the parts? If the answer to either of these questions is yes it's a starting point. Otherwise you have to prove that either the part or the installation was faulty, and here things get complicated.

The problem you have is that you don't want to pay for labour again. Unless you can find a diff specialist to do the work for free I think you've got Buckley's chance.
Because of course you wouldn't want the other guy to do it again - even if he offered to do it for free would you?

Well thats right, he said that if its definately the diff then he wil fix it up but im not sure i want to go down that path again.... i;m going to ask for a refund and even if i get a partial refund ill be happy with that or even if i get him to take it to a diff specialist, i just dont want him to do it again....... I'll let you guys know how it pans out

I sensible plan I think. Hopefully your mechanic will want to keep you as a future customer and you can come to some mutually agreeable arrangement.

Probably, Yes.

I'm no expert but my understanding is that there are quite a few diff parts that are once-only use.
