There seems to be no clear black and white in any of this; other than Switzerland, it seems all countries must take sides in some way or another.

Reflecting back on Nazi Germany and WWII Japan, it seems like an obviously positive decision for the Allies to have been formed and the world "saved". The lines were by no means clear cut but today seem even more blurred. Even the protection of Kuwait seems like an obvious decision (I am of the opinion that American soldiers were welcomed by the Kuwaitis initially but clearly overstayed their welcome).

The powerlessness of the politicians stems from the nature of the enemy; how does Howard really protect anyone from terrorism in any significant way?

Perhaps it's time to forget the "innocent until proven guilty" adage since it's obviously costing many innocent lives. Most likely it will lead to the end of the free lives that we lead today.

I back the suggestion that the Australian gov't, given sufficient evidence (that opens a big can of worms eh), should take justice into their own hands since Indonesia's hands are obviously tied by their "loyalty" to their fellow Islamic states (extremist lunatics included).

How? Any action against people in Indonesia (including islamic extremists) by Australian troups would be considered an act of war by the Indonesians. Last thing we want is a fight with 160 million starving Indonesians.

Hospitality damage report:

Dewi Sri - Minor damage to roof/upper floor, hotel operational**

White Rose - Approx 30% - 40% damaged, hotel evacuated and not operational

Barong - Minor damage to room/upper floor, hotel operational**

Bounty - Apparently more damage to room/upper floor in one wing, assume reduced operations**

Kuta Beach Hotels - no precise information, assume operational**

Troppo Zone - damage unknown, assume hotel evacuated and not operational

Sari Club - no longer exists

Paddy's - completely gutted

Other shops/bars approximately 100m-200m radius (assumed) severely damaged/burnt/closed/gone...

**Biggest difficulty is that yesterday reports had Jalan Legian (from near Bemo Corner to Legian area), Jalan Pantai Kuta (from Hard Rock to Legian Beach Hotel) and the cross streets (eg Poppies Lane, Jalan Mandira etc) are all closed to traffic/access, making it difficult/impossible to get into/out of hotels.

And here we just opened a can of worms. Sorry Naishou, but this just proves a very important point. To most (if not all) the arabs it is called "Israeli occupation". Even the UN passes resolutions telling Israel to get out of the "occupied land". Does anyone remember who attacked the DAY AFTER UN gave Israel a state?

So my point is this: to some people you are occuping their land, or infringing their rights by simply being alive. hence wether you leave them alone or not they will find an excuse to kill you.

Like someone said (this could be bordering on ridiculous):

Send in a small SAS team to track the Al-Qaeda cell members down and assassinate them. It sounds a bit too much like the movies but I don't think it's that far out of their power. Minimal politics involved -- CNN will report him as missing (CNN already has a nasty habit of western (obviously primarily American) bias in their telecast). *yucks nestled brackets*

Iggy I'm talking about the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the usually understood meaning of the term. They were not given to Israel by UN resolution, they were annexed and occupied by Israel.
