i hate that about these motors. this mechanical over rev crap. you know with some cars in drift comps that have stock motors, they down gear to cause compression lock ups to initiate drifts?

that means doing like 120k's an hour and smashing it into 2nd then swingign the steering to start the drift.

do that with an s2k and you'll be up for an expensive repair bill. I just wish the retainers didnt crack so easily... oh well, can't compare diamonds with dirt I guess. hehe.

Robert, whether or not a mechanical overrev happens or not is due to two things. Firstly traction. The more the rear wheels grip, the more the engine will over rev. So crap rear tyres will save you.

Secondly, If your redline is 7K then an over rev to 9K is what the S2000 does every day. Over rev any of those cars to 11K and see what happens.

both points valid, but my point is the s2000 seems to be the only production car that is this sensitive to over rev.
well. to best of my limited knowledge anyway.

Mechanical over revs can happen with all cars.

Down shifting without rev matching and popping the clutch to lock the rear wheels can still cause a mechanical over-rev with the drift cars. Those guys just make sure that they're not going so fast that the rear wheels spin the engine faster than it's supposed to spin.

The SR and RB engines are sensitive to over rev as well. The s2k is easier to over rev because of the smaller gear shift gate (ie easier to miss 4th and shift into 2nd instead) and the lighter f20c engine parts. Over rev an RB engine and the repair bill will be a lot higher than a F20C

s2k engine is just too highly strung producing the power it does out of a pesky two litres with its rotor style high rev limit.

The thing that brought acclaim and fame to the s2k seems to also be its demise. The rate of engine failures is absolutely ridiculous considering the low km's on most engines, and that many of the engines that have failed have been completely unmodified. skyline, 200sx or supra engines are literally bulletproof unmodified. These engines will take a hell of a lot more beating, loads more km's and abuse before they start showing signs of wear or failing and do not require nearly as much attention regarding oil levels.

Dont get me wrong i love the s2k its a great package and performer but the way I feel is that basically something could go wrong at any point for no apparent reason and i'll be on my 3rd engine and have a considerable hole in my pocket to get it back on the road.

Maintaining the car at regular service intervals as per the service manual at honda and replacing any other parts isn't cheap either by any means but probably the only thing that has kept my s2k engine in good running order so far taking into account the constant abuse and thrashing that it cops.

and regarding the s2k being easier to over-rev, i completely agree. In my last manual car, i never over-revved it once. In the s2k I've had a few minor miss shifts, although luckily none when i've been hammering it hard!!

White,

I was wondering...where abouts on Winton did you manage to get into 5th gear? the quickest I managed to get was about 162-163 on the speedo? but that was comfortable in 4th...
