Aus2K, what is your timetable? When are you planning to make your purchase?
What sort of car do you want? A sports car (with or without a roof) or a family sedan? How many passengers do you have? I notice there were no convertables amongst your options. Used MX-5's are a good choice in that price range.
Are you going to use it to drive to work in the peak hour traffic or will you just use it on weekends and holidays?
If you can articulate and explain your requirements to this forum it will certainly help you clarify the situation in your own mind. A little concentrated focus on how you would actually use it will help you make a decision more easily than just a vague image of what might be nice to look at.

DONT, REPEAT, DONT BUY A HIGH KM BMW. thats coming from a bmw service manager. he says that when things go bang, then ur wallet will scream for mercy. ur better off getting a mid 90's bmw with low kms, but at ur price fat chance.
as dan said, really look at what u need it for, ur finishing school, so a big car is not a high priority, go for a small car like a civic, or corolla, turbos r a no go unless someone else is footing the insurnace bill, grey imports r a litle hazy, im still of the opinion that they r a good buy price wise, but its always caveat emptor "buyer beware" with those things, who knows where they been

how about the Pulsar SSS back in the early nineties 2 litre, mini whale tale like a ford sierra. bloody good cars

I like the idea on the Pulsar SSS - lots of fun. How about a newer Impreza RX 2.5 - looks like a Rex (without the bonnet scoops) and reasonably sporty?... or maybe a Golf - not a GTi - but still quite fun to drive.

You can make just about any car very entertaining to drive with about two grand and a trip to K-Mac suspension 
I wouldn't want to park a vaguely nice looking car at uni. Sun, birds and vandals do wonders for your pride and joy. Also don't forget that people who don't know cars pay for image and it puts the price of a lot of cars beyond what they are really worth.
Why not consider something older that you can have a lot of fun with and turn into a project? Actually the Mini you already have would have to qualify as a fun car to drive? People get heaps of enjoyment out of old Escorts, Mazda RX3s and the like. Maybe you've got more money than I had when I was starting uni but if I was buying a car with a lot of kays on it I'd rather go all the way and get something really old.

I know a few people who had those 2L Pulsars. All of them developed high oil consumption, noisy valvetrain and gearbox input shaft bearings. The engine is also quite coarse.

my friend taught Kevin Mac. how to make springs and he says that his springs are a little funny. they are good for the price though but you pay for what you get as with everything in life.
