Bernie,

Couldn't agree more with your statement.
Sure Pat is a nice bloke etc but how does this compare to the story of two women who have set up a womens refuge and fund it out of their pension payments.

I think that kind of contribution is a little more meaningful, inspirational and dare I say it Australian !!!

Well we wouldn't want to encourage people to spend welfare on the poor!

Suggesting that Pat Rafter is undeserving because he has profitted, that his charitable work should be a given considering his wealth, is the Tall Poppy Syndrome all over again.

I find the comment on the tall poppy syndrome insulting. Just because I am of the view that a person who has personally profited should not be AOTY is tall poppy syndrome? Give me a break.

Rafter is, along with John Eales, my two most admired sportsmen in the country. Both of them put a lot back into the community. I'm simply of the view that there would be more deserving people than Rafter for AOTY

Sorry, didn't mean to insult.

Sure, but the only supporting evidence you gave was that he had profitted from it.

I'm sure no matter who is picked there will always be other opinions. Perhaps rather than saying "It's wrong" you could share with us who would be right. That would make it easier to understand.

Pat Rafter is more appropriate as Australian of the Year than the old Salvos because he is more likely to influence people en mass than they are.
Now I'm thinking that Crocodile Hunter should really be AOY. He is VERY AUSTRALIAN (by crikey!) , does a lot to help our native wildlife, and is idolised by hundreds of millions of TV viewers worldwide. Without even hitting a ball.

There's an Australian we should all be inspired by.

Ben you seem to have a problem with balls... is there something you'd like to share with us?

Ahh..It's just been a pet thing of mine. Since I was a little kid I could never understand people getting all involved in ball games. Cricket, tennis, football, golf, soccer, hockey, basketball. I just don't get the BALL thing. Then it gets all commercialised and these people who can handle a ball better than anyone else become legends. Guys..wake up, its a frickin' sphere. There are other shapes that are equally fascinating!
