Exactly.

Cause and effect. Action and reaction.

Oh oh... I feel like I am in the Matrix!

Cayenne - We recently had a similar discussion about Boost Juice. I think we assessed it on similar criteria. I was for it because it was a heathy tasty alternative to junkfood, and you didn't think they had a good business plan (correct?).

Have you reassessed this? They've been going for 9 months and are now in what would probably be their low season.

The difference is that junk food is not addictive. It's the concept I guess that gets the people (ie as you said, the flashing lights, drivethru, etcetc).

But there are companies out there who are trying to make "fast food" also "healthy food". I think Subway has some healthy stuff. Also the Juice-bars are fantastic IMHO. Even Maccas are introducing salads, etc to their menu to make it more "healthy".

I went into a Maccas recently (my friend manages it, I didnt go there to eat!) and it had 4 posters in front of the registers with the nutritional info on it. I counted something like 50+grams of fat in a Big Mac and Chips, plus of course Coke which would have about 8-10 teaspoons of sugar per cup. Yet my god there are so many of the "Large big mac meal please" orders! Yuuuuuuk.

McDonalds has been very clever publicising their nutritional information. They promote it with the insinuation that their food is actually good for you, though they're careful not to say so. Joe average feels reassured and probably doesn't even look at the chart, and if he does he hasn't a clue what it means. 50g of fat? Is that a lot? It darn well is but it doesn't sound like it unless you're used to reading nutritional facts, in which case you don't eat at McDonalds anyway.

I have been encouraged lately though by the degree of apparent desperation at McDonalds. They seem to be losing market share to more sophisticated competitors and are trying to reinvent themselves. Let's hope Australians have too much taste to support lowest common denominator garbage like Starbucks.

That's very true, but one of the major criticisms of McDonalds is that the content of their food isn't publicised. Now it is.

I mean, the local Greasy Joe's fish and chip shop does a burger that probably has double the fat of a Big Mac, yet there's no pressure on them to publicise it.

At least with the facts on the wall the public can't say, 'I didn't know. I'm suing McD's for my weight problem'.
