S2kbee, to import your car you will need a carnet de passage. This is a guarantee that you will export the vehicle within 12 months. A carnet is in effect a passport for your car and is meant for people who are traveling from country to country. It is valid for a maximum stay of 12 months and its purpose is to ensure that you do not sell your car for a profit in a country where vehicle prices are higher than your original point of purchase.
In order to obtain a carnet you will need to lodge a bond of 2 - 2.5 times the value of your car. The bond is lodged with the AA in the UK. Alternatively you may be able to find an insurance company who will put up the bond for you (at a massive premium).
If you do sell your vehicle then you forfeit the value of the bond to the government of the country in which you sold the vehicle.

s2kbee, you have 2 options,; a carnet or pay import duty.
I strongly suggest a carnet. I have used these in the past as I have travelled to most countries in the world on a vehicle I exported from Australia.
I have also had experience in importing personal use vehicles into Australia and believe me it is not pretty. Import duty/ customs rates are asessed based on the value of your vehicle and your period of ownership prior to importation. You will find one off import duties to be somewhere in the region of $20k - $50k Australian dollars. This money will NOT be refunded on export.
I do suggest talking to the AA. I obtained a carnet from them in the UK a while back and they put me in touch with an insurer who put up the bond. The cost at the time was something in the order of 20% of the vehicle value but I suspect you can do a lot better than this. Even if you can't, you will still find

Ask the insurance company you are currently insured with to see if they will cover you? Otherwise here is a page of some Australian insurance companies - most have email addresses that you can contact them by.
