Default 2005-2006 Mazda MX5 (NC)

Hi guys,

I'm on the hunt for a s2000 at the moment as some of you might have seen in my other post, but unfortunately i don't think i'm going to find an s2000 that's really for me (04/05 white or black).

So i've kept in mind the new model 2005-06 Mazda MX5.

I know i'm on an s2000 forum, but I would like to know what you guys think especially anyone here that has driven one and what they thought. Especially compared with their/the s2000. let's try not to be biased guys

way I see it what we think is irrelevant,
no offence meant at all, just to me the
only important thing is what do you think?
Your putting down the hard earned and will
be driving, if you think you'll be happy with
it go for it. Can only assume you've test driven
a few.
My only advice is if you really want the S2000
keep looking.
Bit like me I wanted a Silver S2000, looked at
a Red one but really came to the conclusion that
even if I saved $5000 and got the Red,. every morning
I would walk out and say to myself f..k, wish I bought
a Silver one.
Nothing against all you owners of Red ones, just a
personal preference. Anyway thats my 2 bobs worth.
Cheers and best of luck whichever way you go.

yes, i agree

i have test driven the mx5 and enjoyed it thoroughly.

i haven't actually test driven the s2000, but i thought feedback from people who have experienced both will give me an idea of aspects to consider when i do look at the s2000 or the mx5 in more detail.

The new MX5 is a great step up from the previous models. It's lost some of it's feminine side and toughened up a bit.

That said, it is a long way from an S2000. You really have to decide if you want a very capable and comfortable roadster or a street legal race car.

similar to what peterf said, if in your heart you want an S, every morning you're going to wish you had bought the S..

i almost didn't buy mine, because i never thought i was going to find the right one.. but my girl made me stick in there and i got exactly what i wanted a black s2000...

hey, i've driven both and the new mx5s are nice and have some awesome improvements, but unless you're getting an SE or an SP model, i would take the s2000 any day of the week. but even the SE is 2 seconds slower than the honda.. so, my conclusion, get the mx-5 SP or the honda..

but who am i to say, its all subjective..

I guess the fact that you're asking on an S2k forum shows that you'll never be happy with the MX-5.

thx for the replies..

i've actually read that the new model mx5 is as fast as the SE model, but obviously not as quick as the SP

as for exterior styling goes.. i'm into the 04/05 models..
really have to go out and test drive one.. and if it really impresses, maybe i'll consider an older model s2000..and could probably ditch the mx5 idea

that's a strong possibility..

always been a fan of the s2000.. was very close to buying one a few years back.. but opted for a WRX at the time (for practicality), which i don't regret

i guess it's just time to try out something new, practicality not being an issue now as well..

just i'm going thru a convertible/roadster stage now

The other thing to consider is the owning experience, I am sure that there are mx-5 owners clubs around but the help and advice you get from s2ki is second to none.

You really need to drive an S2000 to understand how different the two cars really are, then you will want one or the other, it won't be a case of needing to choose!

I had a 2001 MX5. Fantastic cars and the new one is even better to drive so I have read. You won't be disappointed with the car at all. It wants not for more power as that's not what it's about. Handling is a dream and dare I say it, better than the S2K in terms of feel and feedback. Outright grip is dependent on tyres but the MX5 chassis has so much inherent mechanical grip that it's on another plane. A recent Wheels test found the lateral Gs the new MX5 could pull surpassed that of even the exotics.

The only downside (which may not be for you) is the exterior styling of the new one. And the stigma and lack of cred the MX-5 has with the ignorant. Either choice you make would be a good one, but make sure it's what you really really want or you WILL get buyer remorse.
