The gap between the new and second hand market is so great (seems to be about 33% from new to 3 years old) that I doubt the new model will have a huge impact on early S2000's. 03's might feel it though.

I think the early cars are moving into a price range that has a much greater number of buyers and the demand will plateau the value.

The gap doesn't help. Markets are fluid, dynamic things. Individual buyers and sellers are influenced by what others do. There's a reason why old cars are cheaper than newer ones, and if newer ones get cheaper then so will older ones. The guy who previously would have bought a 99 model will realise he can get a 00 for the same money. What does that do to 99 model prices? There can't be "many more buyers" for older cars because that would either imply there are many more sellers (where do the cars come from?), or prices would be pushed up (when the whole reason prices are low is lack of demand over supply).

As an example look at MX5 prices. They held rock solid at around 50% of new price from around 4 years after introduction till now. In Melbourne, you still can't buy a '89-90 MX5 for under $14-15k compared with a new price of $28k.

I wouldn't be surprised if that "Honda" brochure turns out to be a forgery.

Hey Aus,

The economists call your hypothesis the 'elasticity of demand'. Its about the sensitivity of demand to price and is quite well a established principle.
