JR rail pass is the best bang for the buck if you are travelling a lot throughout Japan.
Plenty of trains for sure...and you can get reserved seating on the shinkansen whenever you want.

With the JR pass you will be able to go from one of Osaka's JR stations to the Kyoto JR station, which is in the economic center of Kyoto, not the touristic center (mostly farther east).
Private lines however (Hankyu and Keihan) run from Osaka to stations in Kyoto more conveniently located along the Kamogawa river on the east, where most temples are.
But if you are staying in Kyoto then your choice of railway will mostly depend on the location of your accomodation, try to choose it close to the JR station if you plan on using your JR pass often.

Hi guys. Thank you for all your tips... I had a great time in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto... Met lots of nice people and places.. The food was fantastic.. Oh, the internet connection in Japan rocks, so fast!!!!!! Well, I'm back in Houston now and can't wait to visit Japan again.. On my list would be the F1 Japanese granprix @ Fuji circuit !
