How Cheap !!!!!
Is anyone worried about the resale value of their S2000?
I have a friend who is thinking of buying one (because I bang on about how great they are all the time ) and he has been offered an 18 month old car (quite high km - 45k) for Y2.2m.
This sounds so cheap !!
What is driving the prices down so much ???

James.,
yes I was worried! - hence my thoughts about exporting it were very real.
when I bought mine, it was 3.8million on the road - pound was about 180yen.
now it is 195 ish, and my dealer told me not to expect more than 2.4million now, and about 2million next summer when the car is 2 years old, it would have about 15k km's.
In the past I was not that bothered because my company was suggesting that they would support any excess loss - however it seems there is a limit on how much that would be i.e. my car was too expensive or some stupid rule
....since in the apartment complex my company provides there is a Porsche 996, Mercedes S class, Toyota Harrier 3.0 4WD etc, I did not think having an S2000 was that excessive...
I think because the 2nd hand market to private buyers does not exist (like in UK), the cars just end up at an auction - and clearly that pushes down the price.
the key is to find a private customer who then does not pay all the tax (not sure if that is true) and therefore you might get a better price.
I had a colleague trying to offload a TVR, took him a long time to find a private buyer.,

In Japan there is a kind of rule that the 2nd hand price of cars tends to zero over 5 years. So that's why it's losing value so quickly - the higher you're starting point the steeper the drop! It's to do with Japanese regarding 2nd hand stuff as junk. You just have to play to it and buy 2-3 yr old cars but it's hard as you always want the latest model!
I bought my '99 in February for 3mil and now it's worth 2! How about that for depreciation! The other annoying thing is seeing the spread the dealers get.

Do you think that this only applies to Japanese cars? The guy who is thinking of the S2000 wanted (still wants actually) a Boxster, but the prices of those are still way up ! He can't find anything better than a 4-5 year old 2.5 or 2.7 Boxster for about Y4m.
It just seems strange. I know that there is a big difference in the original purchase cost, but the Boxster seems to be holding its price much better than the S2000. Do you think that is just the Porsche name?

It's always supply and demand for pricing - or what a fool will pay!
..SKyline GT-R still does pretty well because there are very few of that exact model - tons of Skyline bog standard - but not many GT-R. I guess S2000 is just becoming a lot more available so shopper can choose more - was not the case when I got mine - there were virtually no 2nd hand on the market and the price of a 2year old car was 85% of a brand new one,.
