S2000s can fall into 4 categories:

1. A-Stock: pretty much stock except for consumables like tires and shocks. I'm simplifying here to keep it short.
2. B-Street Prepared: bolts ons, like springs, header, intake, wheels, etc. You can't strip the car, but parts swapping from other model years is allowed. Engine must still be NA though.
3. X-Prepared: full tilt race cars, but roll-over protection is required because of the speed potential.
4. SSM: forced induction and most BSP mods.

In all S2000 classes, R-comps are allowed. In 2010, there will be a new experimental class called STR that is basically BSP on 245 (max) street tires.

Mike is right: you want to autocross to learn the car's limits sooner rather than later.

Helmets must be Snell rated. DOT ratings are not sufficient.

The minimum rating is Snell 95, but I would not buy one since they are only good for about 18 more months before the next Snell standard comes out.

The official name is "Solo". They dropped the "2" a few years back when they made "Solo 1" into "Pro Solo" and "Solo 2" became simply "Solo"

SCCA Solo requires a Snell rating. The rule is that the current rating and previous two ratings are legal. The current rating is Snell 2005, so Snell 2000 and Snell 95 are still allowed. Snell 2010 will be spec'd next year, and when helmets go into production (early 2011), then Snell 95 will not be legal for Solo competition. All the loaner helmets at Delta are Snell 95 spec.

The Snell 2005 spec comes in two flavors: M2005 and SA2005. Either works for Solo, but M2005 is much cheaper. The "M" stands for Motorcycle, and those helmets start around $60 locally.

"SA" stands for "Special Application" and is required for most types of wheel-to-wheel road racing. They start around $150 and go up from there. SA2005 is generally overkill for Solo, but I would personally recommend SA2005 for Solo use if you have a full cage.

That is only more of a reason to autox the car. The skills that you will pick up on the autox course may just save your bacon on the street. Plus it's fun as all hell.
haha, im still trying to get the fundamentals perfect, not driving it hard, when im ready, ill jump into autocrossing... but for now, i'll be satisfied with tagging along on a run
