Uhh, I wouldn' tell people you're with the Army Corp of Engineers. They don't exactly have a good rep with the N.O. area...

I've been checking out Craig's list, looks like lots of the rentals are around the uptown area. I'm not part of the Army Corp Engineer, I'm going to be working with them as a contractor, so I'm really on the opposite side. I would prefer to live just outside of the city area. I guess most of you guys don't live in the city. I'll check here often and hoepfully make it to the next get together. I'm excited to move, but also at the same time, it feels like crap because I'll be alone in a new city. I guess that's life.

best areas just outside the city would be westbank or metairie. but those would likely be hard to find a roommate.

go for uptown. you will enjoy it for a while.

I plan to get a roommate around the uptown area and look for a house outside of the city.

So far everyone that I spoke to have told me that New Orleans is very dirty and old. It seems that everyone has visited New Orleans doesn't like it.

Hopefully, I'll like it because I'm sick of my current job.

People expect new orleans to be like any other city in the US.

It is not.

If you think of it as a city in europe or more likely south (not latin) america then you are more likely to appreciate/enjoy it.

also most people think new orleans begins and ends at the french quarter.

New Orleans is not your normal city, and people who expect just another typical US city are really clueless.

also -- try the Harahan / River Ridge area... that's a nice area that stayed mostly dry. and there are a number of apartment complexes out there (especially near Elmood) and it's not a terribly long drive to the Tulane area (roughly down Jefferson to S. Claiborne)

i moved out of N.O. to Baton Rouge about 18 years ago, so my info is a bit old at times, but Mark (GengisKwong used to live uptown) and Brian (S2K_LA) are really providing good advice and i can't do much to add to it.

if you do choose an in city or uptown area, run it by us... as like Mark mentioned, the difference between a "good area" and a "bad area" can be a couple hundred feet in the wrong direction.

If you need me to bird dog something for you in New Orleans let me know. I would be more than happy to help you out and drive by a place and take some pictures etc.

I have put the word out that I know a professional looking for a house to rent. PM me your price point and hopefully something will turn up.

I think what he's saying is that New Orleans is often compared by the locals as being more like a city in a 3rd world country than most US cities. A roommate that knows the city and can teach you were to go and not go is a good idea. That doesn't mean that it's a bad place to live, just a little different. The food in NO is hard to beat anywhere as are most of the people who live in the area. The nightlife is also great and there is much to explore on day trips. If you're into fishing, hunting, beaches, gambling, wildlife, history, or eating the place is ideal. Just remember to always be aware of who is around you. The city is fighting to recover from the storm and while it will likely be a smaller city than pre-Katrina I think everyone expects it to be a better city in the future.

I may have missed it, where are you moving from? Looking forward to meeting you at the bug boil!

I live in Orlando right now. Hopefully I'll be in New Orleans by the end of the second week of April. If I'm there, then I'll try to make it to the boil for sure. It would be a good place to start making new friends.

I'm willing to pay up to $600 a month for a furnished room. It doesn't have to be fancy. I just need a bed and some place to put my clothes. A safe area to park the car. I'm going to post an ad around the end of the month to see what I can get.

there used to be shotgun houses uptown with off street parking that you can get the whole thing for $600/month. not sure right now though
