Hi Everyone,

I'll be moving to New Orleans for a new job in April. The bad thing is I don't know anyone there or how things are now over there. I'll be looking for a room to share with people for few months and then try to buy a house. What are some of the good areas to live around the DT area? I don't mind the commute, as long as is within 20 minutes or so. Also, if you know anyone is looking for a roommate, please let me know. I'm a clean professional just turn 30. Straight male. Thanks in advance if anyone could provide some input. Hope to meet some of you guys when I get there.

1)what do you do/who do you work for?
2)where are they located?
3)what is a reasonable rent?
4)how important is proximity to night life?

The warehouse district /CBD is still the premiere area to rent an apartment in new orleans. this area stayed dry and is located real close to many great things. This area is very expensive and you have to usually pay for parking. many young professionals live in this area.

another good option is the uptown area especially near Tulane and Loyola university. rent is better, the area is quieter (except for the college parties).

just beware, New Orleans is not laid out like most cities. There are good blocks and bad blocks. the difference is usually just a couple of houses.

finally, welcome. keep you eyes open in your S. There are potholes and people frequently try to "beat" red lights. Slashing ragtops does not seem to be a pasttime either

 

I work downtown. 1515 Poydras accross from the Dome.

Have you conisdered the Covington/Mandeville area?

I think those areas is little too far. I did a driving estimation online and it calculated more than 40 minutes to get in the city.

you won't start finding houses with actual garages until you hit metairie, old metairie, some of the lakefront and the marrero/westwego area. also consider the westbank. marrero/elmwood/westwego and parts of the westbank are more suburbia and also have sketchy areas.

to find a rental, again I would suggest warehouse district or around Tulane near audubon park.

You will be moving into an area with a bunch of great S2K people. Welcome to the area! I can't advise you on what area to live in but the guys posting above know their stuff. If it weren't for my friends in the NO area I'd feel like I lived too close to the city and I live in the middle of BFE two states away.

 

Georgian Apartments and American Can apartments are the only two that I am familure with. The very few people that I know that still live in the area live there.

I personally live on the Northshore in Ponchatoula and that is about an hour commute. Most of the professionals that I run with live in the Mandeville/Covington area and just take the Causeway to work. That makes for about a 30 minute commute.

I will ask around at work on Monday and see who lives where and what they recommend.
