Smoke in vtec
Hey everyone, not to long ago I was on the freeway and was in 3rd gear through vtec when my car starting throwing out smoke. I pulled over and started driving a few minutes after and smoke was gone. About a week later I was driving and I went into vtec and it started smoking again. No smoke when just driving only when vtec is in. Anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be?

Don't exactly remember the smokes color, I know I need to change my sparks now, and I'm about 2000 into my oil and I use valvoline full synthetic... And it's a 2002

Could be worn valve guide(s). Leakdown test at a competent shop should be able to tell where the issue is and differentiate b/t piston rings or valve guides.
If it is valve guides, I suggest to not let it go too long b/c the possibility of
- worste case is a bent a valve/tap the piston)
- or burn the valves and if carbon builds on the valve seat, it can then damage the valve seat on the head and then the rebuild is more than just valves, guides, springs and keepers.
If you pinch off your PCV/CCV vent line from valve cover to intake manifold, take off your oil fill cap on your valve cover while the car is running, and if you have a lot of smoke shooting out consistently and gets worse when you rev it, that's most likely blow-by but could be worn valve guides as well. I think it's valve guides if you put towl tightly over the cap hole and it gets sucked up an down in an inconsistent manor(cuz it could be just a few valve guides). (can't remember exactly what my grandpa told me)
- blow-by is occuring if after an oil change, your oil gets brown really fast within about 500 miles
This reminds me that I should get a leakdown test done on my M3 just to see where the engine is at right now at.

Check your PCV. If it isn't working correctly then the intake will suck in oil mist.
My new-ish S would smoke on the track at high revs and high-g loads. I modified the crankcase ventilation to fix the situation.
I put a large fuel filter in the PVC line to catch oil spray. I removed the line from the valve cover to the intake manifold. In its place I put a filtered breather on the valve cover side and capped the intake hole.
Works deliciously.
May or may not help you but smoke can come from oil mist being sucked into the intake. But like other posters stated, it could also have other causes.
