Does anyone know if there is a price lock on the S2000 right now in AZ (if not everywhere in the US). One dealership is telling me that there is a price lock of about $36500 retail for a 2001, which is quite a bit over retail...

Yeah, thats what I told myself too, but I have read somewhere that the true market value of the S2000 is actually above retail because the car is a limited release model...has anyone got any real numbers for this??

The fact of the matter is, it varies.

In SoCal the are usually above MSRP, but you can shop around and get it for MSRP. Try the internet, try Ebay, call around to delaers. Also, do a search on MSRP and you will find some good threads discussing this with some good advice.

The phrase "price lock" sounds like anti-competitive behavior to me. It also sounds like the dealer was trying to feed you bull-doodoo.

There are several good, recent threads regarding how to negotiate with dealers. My favorite method is detailed in one of them; basically, it entails setting up back to back appointments with multiple dealers, and then giving each dealer your best price (MSRP + desired options). Keep going to appointments until someone agrees to accept your price. Simple, right?

1) read the threads I mentioned
2) set up financing before visiting the dealer
3) only deal with the internet manager/fleet manager, not the regular salespeople

Good luck,

You should shop around more. I've seen 2001's for under $16000.
