Default Looking for Roadtrip suggestions.

I'm planning to go on a road trip in Sept or Oct. I'd like to go for 3-5 days, possibly six and see some interesting stuff and drive some twisty highways.

I'd be leaving from the SF Bay Area and ending up in San Diego, OR leaving from San Diego and ending up in the Bay Area (my son will go with me and lives in SD... I'll pick him up and fly him home or vice versa)

One example is a short trip but cool... start in BA and drive to Humbolt to the beginning of the PCH... then drive every inch of it to OC and on to SD then home.

I know a lot of you have some good ideas. Any thoughts?

To clarify...

Starting and ending in Cali. NM, Utah, AZ, NV are *definitely* on the list of possible places on the way.

True my example was all Cali but I'm thinking possible places along the way, Moab, , Death valley, Monument Valley... anything. I couldn't possibly know the cool roads though so I can use your help all over.

I agree. I'm doing HMB to Cambria (Hearst Castle) in July.

Glad you told me that. I'd never have guessed. It looks pretty straight and boring on a map. Thanks.

Look at eastern AZ, route 191. Let me drive the Elise and I'll show you some others.

I posted this request (looking for roadtrip suggestions) in several regional forums and I got some great feedback. Thanks to all.

I took it all and collected it into one doc. Then I took the info in the doc and put it on a Google Map. In case you ever need such a thing... here it is.

Thanks again everybody.

Several years back, I took this road trip:

Phoenix -> Orange County/LA (Camped on the beach just north of LA that night)
LA->SF via PCH, beautiful drive, though slow. Had to detour inland halfway up due to a landslide outside Big Sur. Stopped in Marina del Rey along the way. Stayed in a Hostel about 20 miles outside SF--it was an old lighthouse right on the coast, and cheap.
SF->Salt Lake City via I-80. This leg was a bit hellish. 800+ miles, and it was early enough in the year that it was still snowing in the mountains in Nevada. Ended up being an 18 hour drive. Good weather would bring that way down though. Stopped at Lake Tahoe along the way.
Salt Lake City -> Arches Nat'l Park. Some awesome hiking and views here. Tried to camp, but it was full, so we stayed in a hotel instead.
Arches Nat'l Park-> Four Corners -> Hwy 666 in New Mexico -> Flagstaff -> Phoenix. On the last leg, rather than taking I-17, we took highways to go through Sedona, Jerome (birthplace of MJK from Tool), and Cottonwood.

This trip took us 7 days, and you could pick the start and stop anywhere along the way, since it's a big circle. It ended up being almost exactly 3000 miles.
