Default How bad is it to mix oil?

I know that we have some pretty smart people in the AZ community so I figured you guys might know a little about this. I usually run 10/40 synth in both the Subie and the S2k, however I still have a couple of quarts of 10/30 synth from another manufacturer left from a previous oil change. The Subie burns at least 2 qts per oil change (more if I'm driving vs the wifey driving) whereas the S2k burns maybe a half quart. How bad is it to mix brands and weights as I would like to use the other oil as "top off" oil?

If it's not some super high performance motor, I wouldn't sweat it.

Burning 2 qts per oil change sounds like the bigger issue lol

I agree with Boofster, your not running your motor at the edge for extreme periods of time. I've mixed Valvoline and Royal Purple before, for some reason I didn't buy enough quarts of oil for the oil change and I had some RP left from before. I ran the mix for about 4,500 miles no problem. I think you should be fine. By mixing weights you'll just get a different viscosity.

I think it's always better to have oil in the motor then to not mix them... Oil is oil. No oil is bad...

That was always my general rule of thumb, but then I heard something about mixing oils can cause frothing. I never really worried about it before, I just always figured that any oil is better than no oil.

As far as the Subie goes it is a built loose motor, so it's just thirsty.

This is the least flame war oil discussion to ever happen on the Internets.
