I'm having problems removing all of it.
Any suggestions for chemicals that won't eat the finish?
Does brake cleaner mess things up?

I would advise not use break cleaner!

The best philosophy is start with the "least" aggressive strategy and gradually work your way up.

My suggestion is first take the wheels off, heavy warm water with soap like Dawn Dish drops etc.

Then I would use Bug/Tar remover or even a clay bar with soap.

If that fails then 3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Remover.

If those all fail you could try spraying some WD 40 on a rag first and wipe a very small part to see what happens. But have water ready to wash off.

Afterwards I would put some wax on them.

With both sets of my wheels I have a clear coat finish which makes most things easy to get off, and every so often I lay some nice wax on them anyway. You should probably do the same with those nice gold wheels

Good luck!

I have heard great things about Sonax wheel cleaner. Supposedly its like the Jesus Christ of wheel cleaning chemicals. I've been meaning to order a bottle myself.

I like simple green watered down just a tad. Problem with that is it will take all the wax/polish off the wheels. Check out the Sonax stuff too. Best advice, clay the wheels, give them a couple coats of polish, and it should all wash off easily, just make sure you dont let the dust sit on the wheels too long. After my last track day, I let the wheels sit for about 2 days, and it all washed right off. That is because of the polish on the wheels.

When I had my Enkei's in SBC I usually wiped them down at least once a week to keep them clean. I also put 2-3 coats of polish on them when they first came out of the box.

I may have gone too agressive on the front track pads (Cobalt XR2).
Yes I did have monster braking power but either they left burn marks on my front wheels or it's just rock chips. I'm not sure yet. I cleaned off as much as I could with full on Simple Green but some of the spots did not come out. I did this hours after the track day and the wheels were waxed for this purpose.

I will have to try this Sonax thing.
