How do the retainers hold up against a mechanical over-revv?How hard are they to put in?

The titanium retainers and inner springs will allow you to safely raise the RPM to say 9500RPM. and should allow a bit higher RPM w/o floating the valves,

For minor over-rev's they will not crack like the OEM retainers and potentially fail down the road

A major over-rev is still terminal
