i offered to split the cost to fix it 50/50 . but due to personal reasons , he cannot muster up $100 . so can't really do anything if he can't/not willing.

Wow, that sucks big time. The pictures are deceiving of the defects...you should file a PayPal dispute against the seller. Hopefully it will make him think twice about ripping someone else off.

You should open upa paypal claim. The item was SIGNIFICANTLY not as described. You deserve a full or at least partial refund. It's not oyur fault he lost his job, he should have fully disclosed the issues.
