CA: Carbonetics 1.5 way LSD
For sale is a Carbonetics 1.5 Way limited slip unit from an STR part out. Requires a rebuild.
I used the LSD in an SCCA STR built car since 2012. The car put down power much better and the stability was much improved over the OEM Torsen, especially in slaloms. Locking of a carbon unit is fairly gradual, so you can tip into the throttle earlier before the apex. This effect naturally increases straight away speeds with good execution. In addition, the unit does not present any noises with normal operation.
The current unit had the older carbon clutches, which were known to fail if overheated. I wasn't too worried when I installed it since autocrossing does not normally put much stress of the differential with respect to heat due to shorter runs; however, I hot lapped the car continuously at a test n' tune on a warm day. A carbon disc delaminated from the backing plate after about 30 minutes of straight run time on a rather high grip surface. No damage was done to the unit itself, only a carbon pad delaminated. My current plan is to switch cars, which is why I am selling the unit versus rebuilding it myself.
The rebuild parts can be obtained from Active Traction Service (ATS) and the rebuild itself is quite straight forward. Remove the differential stack, replace the clutches and dog ears, and put it back together the same way you disassembled it. The carbon clutches in the rebuild kit are upgraded units from what I had or you can switch over to metal clutches. I inquired and the carbon clutch rebuild kit around ~$700 with taxes and shipping. The metal clutches are cheaper, but I didn't ask what the cost was since I liked the carbon's performance.
Asking $450 shipped (to lower 48 states) in the original box. My asking price point with the rebuild cost is ~$500 cheaper than a new unit with SPEC 4 carbon clutches (shipping and taxes included), so I think my asking price is fairly reasonable but am open to reasonable offers.
