It was definitely stuck, some marks inside the tensioner piston bore. Since your car was spinning when it happened, I'm curious if the sudden slack in the chain from running the engine backwards pushed the piston back.

If it was a unmolested tensioner I'm sure it wouldn't happen. Since this one has been dicked with, anything is possible.

That's crazy.

I roughly polished the original one with 600 grit sand paper, reassembled, reinstalled it in Rodney's S the next day, and it's playing nice.

Weird.
