Stroked and Supercharged AP2 Is a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
With nearly 500 whp and a bone stock appearance, underestimating this AP2 would be a mistake.
The term “sleeper” has existed in the automotive world since the first guy on the planet completed the first engine swap. Since that day, sleepers have evolved to encompass both high-powered stock-appearing rides and beat up speed demons. The term can even be applied to this particular AP2 Honda S2000, which we spotted over at Gateway Classic Cars. On the surface, it looks pretty much bone stock. But under the hood, it’s a totally different story.
It’s there that any S2000 fan worth his salt knows something is just a bit off. The first thing you’ll undoubtedly notice is the Vortech supercharger mounted up top, providing the engine with a healthy 15 pounds of boost. But this isn’t some stock motor with just an added huffer, either. In fact, the inline-four has been punched out to 2.4-liters.
The stroked motor also features goodies including a K24 crank and 9.5:1 compression. The whole combo pumps out an impressive 442 hp and 303 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. On pump gas. A Getrag V160 6-speed manual transmission, along with a beefy 8.8-inch Ford rear end stuffed with 3.90 gears, helps manage that newfound power.
Clearly, this was a no-shortcut kind of build. The seller claims the custom rear axles can handle up to 1,000 hp, and a Detroit Locker further fortifies the rear end. But you won’t sneak up on anybody with a 3-inch exhaust, either. Still, we doubt anybody fails to underestimate this beastly AP2. And if they do, you could always remap the ECU, which reportedly bumps whp to 485.
And hey, even without the killer drivetrain, this AP2 is pretty nice in and of itself. With only 62k on the car and 10k on the build, it still looks essentially new. And with nary an external mod showing, the competition won’t know what hit ’em.
