S2000 With Huge Aero Is Ready for Track Battle
In GRIDLIFE’s Unlimited class, you’re able to run some wild modifications. So why not max out the rules when it comes to aero?
When you’re building a car, you want to abide by class rules. For GRIDLIFE‘s “Unlimited” class, your modifications are just that; unlimited. You’ll have to abide by safety equipment and start with a car that has a proper VIN, but otherwise, have at it. That means huge aero sprouts from the front and rear of just about every Unlimited car.
This car is owned by Niko Pouyoukas, and he’s previously had success with this car. In 2015, he took 3rd place in season points for Unlimited class. But the car has changed a lot since then.
Pouyoukas’ Instagram page showcases preparations for the car’s up-coming season. Namely, that enormous front splitter. To our eyes, it looks to be about 8 feet wide. But you need all that front downforce to work with the back wing, which is just as wide. Up front, there’s also hood vents to allow air to escape from the lay-flat radiator. Those vents also help cool the engine, which of course has a turbocharger. Carbon fiber headlight covers complete the front end.
The back wing is mounted on swan neck mounts, and is hard mounted to the body of the car. Its design though is meant for maximum downforce. Made of dual elements, this type of wing increases the effective downforce without having to pay as much of a penalty in terms of drag. Combined with the enormous rear splitter, this car is really ready to hit the track.
Our friends over at Honda-Tech have pointed out that Honda is the current king of time attack, although right now, that crown belongs to a front wheel drive car. Can Pouyoukas earn back the top spot with an S2000? Well, considering he also has a turbocharged Honda making about the same horsepower as the top competition, there’s a chance. Gridlife‘s official Midwest Festival is on October 1st at Gingerman Raceway in Michigan. A Civic has posted a 1:23.775 as the current Gridlife time attack record. It’s a lofty number to beat.
It’s also possible that this car will appear in more than just Gridlife events. A lot of time attack racers will also enter other series under the North American Time Attack Council which includes Gridlife, Super Lap Battle, Global Time Attack, and SCCA Time Trials.
