Default Growing hops... my story

My neighbor's yard next to me is an eye soar, so instead of putting up a fence and loosing 3' of my property because of set back laws, I decided to put up a wall of green.

Hops, as in what is used to make beer, are the fastest growing vines, these plants can reach over 25' tall in a single season, and have been reported to grow more than 9" in a good day.

Hops are a perennial, meaning you plant them once and they come back each spring. The interesting thing is the vine dies off completely in the fall/winter, so each spring you get to watch over again the miracle of the fast grow.

I'm starting small, with one section 12' wide, I bought 16' 4x4's and have them cemented in the ground about 2.5 feet. I was unsure if this was enough, but I did not want to loose too much height. I figure this year will be my test year, and if I need to make changes I will know what they are in the fall and can make them then.

So, here is how the project has gone so far.

Moving timber 16' long, in a truck that is about 18' looks silly

If it were not for the clever Nissan tie-downs in the floor I could never have gotten these things home in just a 6.5' bed

Holes were dug, gravel placed in bottom, 4x4's planted and cement poured in around them to fill the hole, side braces used to make sure 4x4's were perfectly vertical

Here is the view to the North, soon this ugly view of all the cut down dead trees will be blocked

The view to the west, these suckers are really tall...

I should have more pics on Tuesday after the holiday. I need to get the upper brace on, get the vertical stringers in place the vines will grow up, get the hops planted, and maybe, just maybe decide to put in another 12' section. We'll see, the big variable is how far apart to actually plant the plants.

On a serious note, Good luck with the project Doug. I googled Hop plants and can see how they'd lend to enhancing the view or for that matter keeping things out of view.

Cool. Those poles are hilarious !!!!!!
Reminds me of the goalposts of that Australian Rules football they used to televise on ESPN.
Good solution, but will raise an eybrow or two.

The learning of beer making is indeed in the back of my mind.
NY used to be a very big exporter of hops, but for whatever reason this changed over the years.
It might be premature to start calling me Farmer Hood, but I have already been speaking to Mike the owner of Custom Brewcraftes in Honeoye Falls about my plants.
I have a variety going in, Cascade, Willamette, one other I have not received yet from another company, and of course Mt Hood.

Wow, never thought about that, but the idea is indeed a winner!

Maybe I need a sign "Triple H Farm"
